A dedicated team from Eco-Himal Austria, led by Dr. Kurt Luger and Dr. Rudolf, EcoHimal Nepal Executive Director Mr. Dhakal Eak Narayan, and the Foundation project team visited the Agroforestry for Climate Change Adaptation initiative in Lumang, Trashigang, from November 17th to 21st.
The project is implemented in three Dzongkhags, Trashigang, Trashiyangtse, and Dagana, for three years ( 2023- 2025), focusing on five Components: promotion of green technologies for climate-resilient farming, local seed preservation for food security and nutrition, Sustainable Land Management, Springshed Management, and Access to credit. Overall, the project benefits more than 1,000 households.
Highlights of the Visit, the team:
-Actively engaged with the Khasingri community, the beneficiaries of the water supply activities, while inspecting reservoir tanks and water taps. This hands-on approach fostered a sense of connection and involvement among the community members.
-Monitored the progress of electric fencing as one of the technologies for addressing the Human-Wildlife conflict at Kharphu village
-Participated in an insightful presentation by Kharphu’s Tshogpa, showcasing the project’s transformative impact on the Lumang community and discussing the way forward
-The team diligently reviewed sustainable land management practices at Lumang village and held meaningful discussions with the Darna community. This thorough review ensured that the team was well-informed and aware of the local practices and their impact
-Consulted with the Gup and Tshogpas of Lumang block on challenges, opportunities, and future collaborations
-The communities exhibited the diversity of local seeds, bamboo nurseries, and different types of machinery for farming
Back in Thimphu, the team met with the Foundation’s Executive Director to exchange constructive feedback and explore new collaboration opportunities. They also visited the Mountain Hazelnut Orchard in Chagtagang, reaffirming their interest in re-establishing past partnerships.
To complete their visit, the team explored Thimphu’s cultural richness, stopping by the National Zoo, Buddha Point, local handicraft shops, and more. A wrap-up session in the evening highlighted progress and set the direction for the future.
